"Ring of Fire" Eclipse Party at Ardantane Sunday

You Are Invited to the RING OF FIRE Eclipse Party

WHAT: Potluck, Schmoozing, Drumming, and Viewing the Annular "Ring of Fire" Eclipse, a rare event that happens to be perfectly viewable from New Mexico this time.

WHEN: Sunday, May 20, from 4:00 to 9:00 pm. We will gather around 4:00, share potluck around 4:30-5:30, then drum and flute for the eclipse, which should hit its peak shortly before the sun sets near Guadalupe Mesa around 7:30.

WHERE: At Ardantane south of Jemez Springs. About 1 hour's drive from the "Big I" in Albuquerque. E-mail (ardantane-director@ardantane.org) or call (505-469-7777) for directions to Ardantane. We will watch the eclipse from the Sun Circle up on the Dragon's Back.

GEAR: We will have eclipse safety glasses available. Bring comfy clothes (layers), a folding chair, a potluck dish, and drum, flute, or rattle.

COST: Free of charge. Of course if you want to make a contribution to Ardantane's building fund, we will gladly accept it.

Ardantane at Beltania Festival

Hi Folks,

Azrael and I, and Bob of Blessed Beavers renown, attended Beltania in Colorado this past weekend. We did the main ritual and a workshop on behalf of Ardantane, and had an information/sales booth.

This festival is only about five years old, but they really have their act together. The focus is on music, this year featuring S.J. Tucker, Tuatha, Sharon Knight, Pandora Celtica, and Orpheus Choir among others. There was also a wonderful attempt to break the Guiness World Record for largest Maypole dance, lots of craftspeople, vendors, bardic circles, rituals, workshops, and a food vendor.

Great people, great music, highly recommended. This year was cold, rainy, and foggy, but that happens sometimes at Beltane. We're glad we were part of it.

We could REALLY use some help Saturday at the Blessed Beavers work party. Rowan will be hosting while Az and I are representing Ardantane at Beltania in Colorado, and I know she would appreciate your help.

The work party is Saturday, May 12. Three projects need your help:

Sanding and staining shelves for the Dome bookcases, to house the Ardantane Library

Weeding, mulching, and general care for the Oasis "garden"

Cleaning out and organizing the tool shed

As usual, the activity start by 9:00 am, wrap up by 4:00 pm. Cold beverages, lunch, and Beaver Bucks are provided.

We have work gloves for you, but bring a sun hat and wear scruffy clothes.

WEAVING A LIFE SERIES: You Are the Creator

Join Kathy Damaras (weaver, herbalist, and acting Dean of the School of Healing Arts) for a wonderful journey of self-discovery through weaving.

Beginning weavers will find basic tapestry techniques, experienced weavers will discover new dimensions in their work, but it is through creative play that our inner values are revealed. In this weaving journey you are the creator. Your loom is first a mirror to reflect who you are now, then a window to imagine who you would like to become and finally a doorway through which you will step into the realization of that vision.

You will learn to weave 6 keyforms that represent six stages of development of awareness of your inner landscape. The peace that comes inside when our inner and outer lives are not at war with each other, but are instead woven together, spills over into our families and communities.

New Overnight Cabins at Ardantane

Cattail Cottage, near the entrance to Ardantane, is nearing completion and will be available for overnight students soon.

It is our "Water Element" cabin, and is situated next door to the Water Shrine where a young cottonwood and two willows are growing. The Shrine also features a standing stone with an image of Avanyu, the Southwestern Water Serpent, carved into it.

Cattail will have a canopy bed that sleeps one, and a queen-size bed. It is furnished with fine cherry and mahogany furniture donated by Azrael, and decorated in blues and greens.

We hope to have the final interior details done within a month or two, and electricity run to the cabin as soon as the funds are available.

Also in progress is "Kitschwitch Cottage," a salvaged shed that will sleep two. It will have a Halloween theme. Workers have added a window and are installing insulation as I write this; painting and drywall will happen this week. Kitschwitch is farther from completion, but may be operational sometime this fall.

We thank the generous donors who are making this possible, and look forward to offering these new, cozy accommodations to students and visitors.

Celebrate Beltane Friday at Ardantane

This Friday, April 27, at 6:30 pm, join us for a Beltane celebration at Ardantane.

Beltane (""Bel's Fire") is one of the most ancient of sabbats, celebrating life, fertility, and the full-fledged emergence of spring. Bel is a Celtic god of life and the sun. In ancient times this event was marked by dancing the maypole and making love in the forest and fields until dawn.

We will have a (somewhat less rowdy) ritual at 6:30, followed by a potluck in the Dome. Wear festive clothing, and bring a dish or beverage to share. The event is open to the public; families with children are welcome too.

Walking the Land at Ardantane

Walking the Land at Ardantane is a spiritual experience for me. Not a dramatic, glorious epiphany or apotheosis, just a gentle settling back into the web of life and the beauty of nature.

Today I saw the brilliant scarlet flowers of barrel cacti beginning to bloom. For some reason, one flower blooms on each plant well before the others, which are still dark red, folded buds. We also have occasional yellow or white daisies (or something similar), and a bristly, low shrub with lots of tiny, deep purple flowers.

I talk to the trees as I walk. Guess that would seem silly to muggles. But I like to commemorate the ones that have died in the drought and bark beetle plague, tell them they did well, and are still serving even as their wood returns to the sandy red soil here. I like to applaud the gnarly, twisted old junipers that survive against all odds, and to encourage the bright young pinon pines growing up.

I admire the pebbles and stones, and the big boulders encrusted with lichen. Today I found a juniper stump holding in its fork a quartz river stone, about two feet off the ground. That stone was rolled and shaped in some ancient river, or perhaps on the coast of a Triassic sea; then found the land lifting it to 6000 feet high, and then a growing tree captured it and lifted it two feet more. The tree died, the stone still keeps its watch, waiting for the next adventure a few eons from now.

Along the Seeker's Path, there was a gray-white agate gleaming; I picked it up and discovered a simple chopper, worked and edged by the hand of someone centuries gone. I find ancient stone tools here fairly often; I think people who needed a tool just grabbed the nearest likely rock, smacked off enough to make it functional, used it once, and left it lying on the ground for me to find. Only fancy tools from the best obsidian, chert, or agate would be kept; the rest of the time, who needs to carry rocks when you can make a new tool in seconds?

Coming back from these walks, my body is hot and sweaty but my spirit is healed and at ease. I wish you could experience the land here... well, actually you can! Why not come up to Ardantane to hike, camp, picnic, meditate, or do some private ritual? (Just let us know when you're coming.) If you would enjoy something a bit more structured, with a small group, sign up for our "Tree-hugging Dirt-Worshippers" weekend on May 26-27. I'll be there, and would love to see you enjoying Ardantane.

Ardantane Shows the Flag in Louisiana

Hi Folks,

Azrael and I just returned from Springfest at Gryphon's Nest Campground in Louisiana. We led three workshops on behalf of Ardantane (Discovering Your Magickal Persona, Getting Personal with Gods and Goddesses, and Spellcrafting. All of them were well attended and well received.

You couldn't ask for a more warm, friendly Pagan community. And the campground is 50 acres of gorgeous: grassy meadows, huge live oak trees complete with hanging Spanish moss, and even a wooden path leading into an adjacent swamp environment.

The program included Mome Maddison and the House of the Fire Serpent, teaching in the Macumbe-Voudun tradition; Paul and gerry Beyerl, incredible herbal masters from Washington State; great music from Spiral Rhythm; drumming with Louis Martinie; and more.

It was a fine festival, which we highly recommend to anyone who can get there. We hope to get back there soon!

Live Plesiosaur Found Entombed at Ardantane

Dinosaur fossils are common in northern New Mexico--the seismosaur was discovered only a few miles to the west of the Ardantane campus--but scientists were shocked and amazed when a red Triassic sandstone cliff fractured here, revealing a living plesiosaur.

300 million years ago, the "Red Rocks" region of the Jemez Mountains was the floor of a warm, shallow sea, and the swimming dinosaur-like reptiles were common. But no one anticipated that one of these 80-foot creatures could survived, entombed in solid rock, for eons of time.

When erosion fractured the cliff on the northern boundary of Ardantane's property, along Canon Cercado, the huge reptile crawled forth and was first spotted by hikers from Sunflower River who were enjoying the bright spring day. The animal was severely dehydrated and immediately lunged for the water bottles and canteens carried by the intrepid hikers, which they gladly gave up to the thirsty creature.

The plesiosaur swallowed the receptacles whole, then began awkwardly galloping toward the Jemez River on its giant flippers. Along the way it crashed into two Ardantane buildings -- ""Kitschwitch" and "The Dapper Crapper," an unused outhouse -- both of which sustained minor damage.

The creature was last seen frolicking in the Jemez River and moving upstream toward Giggling Springs, where it presumably hoped to procure a blueberry smoothie and a long soak in the warm waters.

Through magick, we transform the reality we live in. Magick is found in all times and cultures, and despite differences, there are also many common patterns, concepts and practices. This weekend workshop provides intensive hands-on instruction on the theory and practice of creating positive change by magickal means. The emphasis is on ideas and techniques that allow you to create your own spells or magickal workings, rather than relying on what others have done. Topics covered include magickal symbolism, raising and directing energy, ethical uses, and magick as a tool for spiritual growth. Both planning and execution of magickal work are considered in detail. The course covers astrological timing as well as the use of herbs, oils, and tools. Participants will be required to pledge to use these techniques in an ethical manner.

Help at Ardantane Work Party March 31

Special Blessed Beavers Work Party March 31

You are invited to come to a special work party on Saturday, March 31 at Ardantane.

We'll be starting about 9:00 am (but you can come up later if need be), and wrap up around 4:00 pm. Free lunch and beverages, and of course Beavers Bucks good for any Ardantane event. Wear grubby work clothes, layers, and a hat. Work gloves provided.

We need some painting, some gathering and hauling, some simple carpentry. You don't need to be skilled, although there are a couple carpentry projects that could use folks good with tools.

We could use a bunch of help on the new bookshelves for the Dome: sanding, staining, and assembling them. If we have enough people, we need to finish painting the inside of Cattail Cottage too.

Pantheacon and ConVocation

Azrael and I recently returned from Pantheacon in San Jose, CA, where Rowan and Falco and other dear friends from "the 'hood" were also present and participating. Great conference, and Ardantane had its usual table plus workshops to spread the word.

Following that, Az and I went straight to ConVocation in Detroit, another wonderful hotel conference, where we did 3 workshops and a ritual and had an Ardantane table. I got laryngitis and was semi-functional for some of the programs, but Azrael picked up the slack and I started to improve once I gargled with--pickle juice! (Thanks, Kathy.)

Highly recommended: attend one of these two great events next year if you possibly can. Wonderful workshops, rituals, and concerts by talented Pagans from all other the country and beyond. But you'll want to be signing up early (like August?) for next year, these conferences fill fast.

One Day of Visioning for Ardantane

On Sunday, February 12, Ardantane will hold a Visioning Retreat in Albuquerque at the home of one of our Board members. It's a comfy and elegant setting; all it lacks is you.

You are invited to spend the day envisioning Ardantane's future. We need your ideas, suggestions, proposals, critiques, needs, and dreams to chart Ardantane's future and serve you better. The event is free and open to all friends of Ardantane.

Imbolg, (also called Oimelc, Candlemas, Brigit's Eve, and other names) is the festival of returning light, and the promise of spring reawakening, as well as honoring the Celtic goddess Brigit.

YOU ARE INVITED to celebrate at Ardantane on Friday, February 3rd, at 6:30 pm. Wear festive clothes and bring a potluck dish or beverage to share. (No, we don't try to organize our potlucks because we never know who's coming. However, main dishes--both meat and vegetarian--are always popular.)

Celebrate YULE Friday at Ardantane!

Yule Celebration at Ardantane

This Friday, December 16, we will gather to celebrate the Winter Solstice at Ardantane. Come make merry with us!

We will gather about 6:00 pm in the Dome, and begin the ritual at 6:30. There will be singing and a Yule tree and fun and visits from Legendary Personages, so so we hear. Candlelight and music and companionship on the eve of the sun's rebirth--what could be better?

After the ritual, join in a potluck feast (bring a dish or beverage), and there will be a Yule Card table with materials for creating your own original holiday card for that special someone.

If you don't want to drive back, you can stay over in one of the cottages; just let us know so we can save a bed. No charge for the ritual or overnight accommodations.

We will have a cauldron there, and will accept donations for a worthy cause: this time, a human rights organization, since it's International Human Rights Week. So if you have a few bucks to spare, put 'em in.
