Samhain (pronounced “SOW-en”) is the Celtic Pagan feast day honoring our ancestors and those who have passed during the preceding year.
It will be commemorated on Friday, November 2, 2018 at the Ardantane campus, south of Jemez Springs. Participants will gather about 6:30 pm and the ritual will begin at 7:00.
Everyone is invited to bring a photograph or token of your beloved dead, or anyone who is no longer with us whom you would like to honor. These will be placed on an Altar of Remembrance, and we ask that you remember to take them home after the ceremony.
Samhain traditionally takes place on October 31st, though at Ardantane we schedule the commemoration on the nearest Friday. However, it is not the same as All Saints’ Day, and certainly not Halloween, which is a modern secular and commercial event. It bears some resemblance to the Mexican Day of the Dead, though arising from a different religion and culture.
The evening’s program will recognize the loss we feel, but also celebrate the lives of those lost to us, and our belief that they continue on another plane of existence, and that we will be reunited with them in time.
There is no charge for this event, although voluntary donations are gratefully accepted to defray costs. Participants are invited to dress in whatever way feels appropriate, and to bring beverages and dishes to share in the potluck dinner that follows the ritual.
